HAMPDEN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Bangor roller derby league has only been around for a few years, but the women say they already feel like family because of all of the ups and downs they've been through.
From the veterans to the "newbies," they all say it's the struggles they go through in the sport that bring them together.
"We all just know how much work we put into this, so there's respect that goes out to every derby girl that's out there and that's an amazing thing," says Desi Clark. She's one of the league's founding members.
Erin Griffith is a newer member - only competing for a month. She says the outreach and support from other skaters has been incredible.
"Ever since I got here, people have just pulled me aside and showed me new tricks to learn and helped me grow as a skater and helped me grow as a person," says Griffith.
The league also is a huge proponent of giving back to the community. They're hosting a bout on Saturday, June 1st. Portions of the proceeds will go to the Maine Troop Greeters.
