SKOWHEGAN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- In the state of Maine, the words "field hockey" are synonymous with "Paula Doughty." No surprise, since the Skowhegan Head Coach has guided her teams to 11 of the last 12 state titles. On Sunday, Doughty will be inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.
Doughty has coached the Skowhegan Field Hockey team since 1974. But it's not always about athletics. She makes sure her athletes know that she prioritizes academics. As a result, dozens of her players have earned scholarships to some of the country's top colleges, including Harvard and Columbia.
She says the lessons that her players learn on the field translate to the real world. "I expect them to get all the skills through field hockey that they need in life. To pick themselves up, to get going again," she says.
8 other prominent figures in the Maine sports world will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday in Augusta.
