BRUNSWICK - Daniel Weiniger scored a hat-trick Saturday afternoon to lead the Bowdoin College men's hockey team in a 5-2 win over visiting Hamilton College.

Second ranked Bowdoin rebounds from yesterday's loss and improves to 17-2-1 (11-2-1 NESCAC). Hamilton suffered its second loss of the weekend and falls to 5-12-3 (3-9-2 NESCAC).

The Polar Bears opened the first period scoring at 3:29 into the game. Colin Downey controlled the puck skating around the back of the net before sending a quick pass to Weiniger in the left circle. Weiniger one timed the puck to the left side before Hamilton goalie Joe Quattrocchi was able to recover from the right post.

Hamilton answered with the tying goal at 4:42. Nicholas Vassos set up in the slot and dished a clean pass to Patrick Sen on the right who quickly returned the puck to Vassos. Still in the slot, Vassos one-timed the puck past Bowdoin goalie Max Fenkell to even the score at 1-1.

Bowdoin took the lead for good courtesy of John McGinnis at 10:03. Danny Palumbo offered up a hard shot that was turned away by Quattrocchi, but McGinnis grabbed the rebound and made another bid. Quattrocchi blocked the second attempt as well, leaving the puck just beyond the left post. McGinnis carried his momentum to the net and grabbed his own rebound before flipping a backhanded shot inside the left post.

The Polar Bears extended their lead to 3-1 with just over 30 seconds to play in the second period. Ollie Koo skated in and dished a flat pass to the right where Robert Toczylowski sent the puck to the left post. Bowdoin upped the score to 4-1 at 9:53 when Koo made a sharp pass from the goal line across the crease to Weiniger on the left side, who then delivered his team-leading 13th goal of the season.

Hamilton halved the Bowdoin lead with its second goal of the game at 12:47 into the third period. A shot from Anthony Ruberto hit Fenkell square in the chest before bouncing off into the Bowdoin net.

With under a minute to play Weiniger capped the hat-trick on an empty netter from the right circle.

Fenkell made 30 saves to earn the Bowdoin win. Quattrocchi also made 30 blocks in net for Hamilton.

The Polar Bears head to Wesleyan for a game next Friday beginning at 7:00 PM.
