PORTLAND - Pirates goalie Mike Lee stopped all five shots in the shootout and Chris Brown scored the game winner in the fourth shootout frame as the Portland Pirates started the second half of the season with a win over the Worcester Sharks 3-2 at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The win gives the Atlantic Division leading Pirates 54 points on the year, while the Sharks now have 46 points on the year.
The Sharks was awarded the first power play of the game just 23 seconds in when Pirates defenseman Chris Summers was called for interference. The Sharks managed to get three shots on net and Pirates rookie goalie Mike Lee, making his second career AHL start, stopped them all.
The Pirates scored the first goal of the game at the 5:42 mark when Phil Lane skated inside the blue line and fed Rob Klinkhammer, who took a wrist shot from the top of the circle to beat Sharks goalie Harri Sateri for his 10th goal of the season. Russ Sinkewich was also credited with an assist, his 4th as a Pirate. The Sharks had a great opportunity to tie the game when Pirates forward Brett Hextall was called for hooking and unsportsmanlike with 12:56 left in the period. The Pirates successful killed the penalty only allowing two shots, and maintained the 1-0 advantage through the end of the first.
The Pirates took a 2-0 lead when they capitalized on a Freddie Hamilton unsportsmanlike conduct penalty with 11:46 left in the second, when Klinkhammer made a pass from the right corner out front to a wide open Ethan Werek, who put the puck pass Sateri for his 8th goal of the season. Chris Summers, fresh off his first AHL All Star appearance, was also credited with an assist on the goal.
The Sharks cut the lead to one when they took advantage of a delay of game penalty on Pirates defenseman Mathieu Brodeur. The goal came just 36 seconds into the power play when Sharks forward Tim Kennedy was able to find the loose puck in front of the net and put pass Lee with 4:55 left in the period. It was Kennedy's 13th goal of the season. Danill Tarasov and Bracken Kearns were credited with the assists on the goal.
The game stayed 2 -1 until 3:12 left in the third period when the Sharks tied it up at two just two seconds after a Jordan Szwarz slashing call, when Tarasov was able to put the puck past Lee. It was Tarsov's third goal of the season. Kennedy and Denny Urban were credited with the assists on the goal. The game remained through the end of regulation.
No goals were scored in overtime so the game went to a shootout. In the shootout Lee stop all five shots he faced, two of the Sharks shot hit the post. Sateri stopped the first three shots for the Sharks before Brown was able to beat Sateri blocker side to give the Pirates the 3-2 win over the Worcester Sharks.
The Pirates improved to 26-16-1-1 record, while the Sharks fall to a 20-17-1-5 on the year. Lee improves to 3-0-0 on the season with the win, while Sateri falls to 8-9-2.
The Pirates get back to action tomorrow night as they face the Albany Devils on Go Red! Night presented by the American Heart Association at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland. Puck drops at 7 pm.
