AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The 3rd annual Gaziano awards were honored at the Augusta Civic Center on Sunday. Three offensive and defensive linemen candidates were vying for the title, after the initial field of 31 was whittled down to 6 players.
Bobby Begin of the Thornton Academy Trojans won the O-Line award, while Kurt Massey of the John Bapst Crusaders earned the defensive honor. Both players say they were truly touched to receive the award.
"It's just so great to give lineman the respect they deserve because they battle every single play and all the backs, even though they're all great backs, they get all the credit," says Begin, "So I'm really happy to represent the lineman of my team, of the state, and of this award.
Massey agrees. "This award means everything to me. It means that all the time and effort I've put into my, not only everything that I've put on the field, but everything I've put in the community and in the classroom has paid off."
Both Begin and Massey received a $5000 scholarship. The runners-up each won $1000 in scholarship money.
