San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - The University of San Diego promoted defensive coordinator Dale Lindsey to its head football coach on Friday.

Lindsey, who will turn 70 next month, will be introduced at a news conference Saturday. He replaces Ron Caragher, who recently was hired as head coach at San Jose State.

Lindsey was the linebackers coach at USD in 2008, left to become New Mexico State's assistant head coach and linebackers coach for three seasons from 2009-11 and then returned to the Toreros for this season's Pioneer Football League tri-championship season.

Lindsey has over 30 years of coaching experience at the high school, college and professional ranks. He had two stints with the San Diego Chargers, including as the defensive coordinator in 2002-03, and also coached with the Washington Redskins, Chicago Bears, New England Patriots, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers.

Lindsey played both linebacker and fullback at Western Kentucky, helping the 1963 Hilltoppers to a 10-0-1 mark and the Tangerine Bowl title. He went on to play nine seasons at linebacker for the Cleveland Browns (1965-73).
