Newark, DE (Sports Network) - Tianna Hawkins posted a double-double with 16
points and 16 rebounds on Thursday as No. 9 Maryland knocked off Delaware,
69-53, at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Alyssa Thomas added 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Katie Rutan contributed
13 points on 5-of-8 shooting for the Terrapins (8-2), who have won four
straight since a loss to second-ranked UConn on Dec. 3.
Elena Delle Donne led all scorers with 19 points and pulled down six rebounds
for the Fighting Blue Hens (5-3), who had a four-game winning streak snapped.
Lauren Carra donated 16 points and six rebounds, while Danielle Parker gave 10
and nine boards in the setback.
Delaware scored six straight points to tie things at 26, but the Terps
responded with a 9-0 run to get out to a 35-26 lead with 3:30 to play in the
half. Maryland held a 35-28 advantage at the break.
Delle Donne nailed a jumper with seven minutes to play, cutting the
Maryland lead to 55-51, but the Terps closed the game with a 14-2 surge to run
away with the victory.
