AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Not every football player on the field always gets the recognition they deserve. But on Sunday, the best offensive and defensive linemen in the state did.
The second annual Frank J. Gaziano Awards were held at the Augusta Civic Center. Eight of the top linemen were nominated for the trophy that gets awarded to the best athlete who also contributes to his community and excels in the classroom.
Luke Libby from Thornton Academy won Offensive Lineman of the Year, and Logan Mars from Scarborough High School won Defensive Lineman of the Year.
"It's awesome," Libby said. "I can't even explain how amazing this feels to win."
"Everybody in this room, there's obviously a huge wealth of football knowledge and everything," Mars said. "And all the people that I had to go against in order to win this award, they're all outstanding football players. Honestly, I don't think I deserve it any more than they do. To be honored with this award, it's huge. I'm kind of dumbfounded right now."
The two runners-up for the offensive line award were Matt McLean from Windham and Rudy Pandora from Lewiston. The runners-up for the defensive award were Max Andrews from John Bapst and Matt Ross from Cape Elizabeth.
