#5 USM baseball's late letdown costly against Babson

GORHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The fifth-ranked Southern Maine baseball team was on its way to their 12th win in 13 games, but a five-run 8th inning doomed them in a 6-4 defeat to Babson.

South Portland's Andrew Richards (2-1) took the loss giving up 5 runs on 5 hits in 1 1/3 innings.

USM jumped out to 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when sophomore infielder Sam Dexter (Messalonskee H.S.) drove in freshman Paul McDonough (Wells H.S.) for the game's first run Dexter would subsequently steal third and then would come into score after a throwing error.

The Huskies third run came in the bottom half of the seventh when Matt Bender's sacrifice fly plated catcher Matt Verrier (Oxford Hills H.S.)

Junior pitcher Alex Tobey (Berwick Academy) pitched 5.2 innings allowing a run on 4 hits with a walk and 3 strikeouts.

Up next for USM (24-8) is a doubleheader at Little East Conference rivals Keene State on Saturday.
