FALMOUTH. Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Police say they've busted a homemade counterfeiting operation being run by a man from Portland out of his basement.
According to investigators Jonathan McDonald had been spending fake twenty dollar bills at several businesses in Falmouth and Portland. They say Portland police caught him in the act on Tuesday.
Police executed a search warrant for McDonald's parents home where he had been staying. They found more than a thousand dollars in fake money, copying machines, and small amounts of heroin.
"Every community gets a couple of bills a year, nothing too crazy. But to get it at this frequency and to find this type of operation going on is very unusual, said Lt. John Kilbride of the Falmouth Police Department.
Mcdonald is charged with 4-counts of aggravated forgery. He's being held at the Cumberland County Jail on 5-thousand dollars bail.
