BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Mourners gathered in Bangor Sunday afternoon to bid farewell to one of Maine's first troop greeters.
That's the job that Bill Knight did for a number of years at Bangor International Airport. He passed away on Christmas Day last month at the age of 91.
Since starting more then a decade ago, the Maine troop greeters have sent off and welcomed home more than a million military men at women. Knight was one of the greeters featured in "The Way We Get By" --- a documentary on the group that drew national attention.
Friends of the World War II veteran say he did the job with love and pride for every troop that came in .
On Sunday active military, veterans and members of Maine's congressional delegation were among those at Knight's funeral. He will be laid to rest in the spring.
