(WFLA) A honeymooner nearly lost his life in Florida this week when he was caught in a rip current.
Thankfully Jonathan Kiviniemi was rescued by a mysterious teenager who brought him back to shore and then vanished.
The man never got to say thank you, until now.
Thanks to the help of NBC Tampa, Florida affiliate WFLA, Kiviniemi was reunited Thursday with that mystery teen.
The near death incident happened Monday night on Florida's siesta key beach when Kiviniemi became stuck in a rip current.
"Tried to find my way back in, couldn't. Started getting weaker and weaker," said Kiviniemi. "i started yelling for help."
Kiviniemi who was with his wife Alexa were at the beach on their honeymoon.
During the terror, all she could do was watch.
"He was going to die," said wife Alexa.
Then suddenly out of nowhere, young surfer Sam Somogyi appeared and was ready to help.
Somogyi used his surf board to help Kiviniemi back to shore then the 154-year-old quickly disappeared.
"Well i saw that him and his wife were embracing each other, and i thought, my duty was done," said Somogyi.
On Thursday, Kiviniemi got to thank the 15-year-old in person.
The high school sophomore says survival instincts kicked in.
"At the beginning, he was kinda freaking out, he was out of breath, and then by the end he was helping me," Somogyi said.
Once on land, the fifteen year old couldn't stick around, he had to study for a test.
"It was a long day, i was tired, i was hungry, i had homework, i had stuff to do, yeah."
While the Kiviniemis consider Somogyi a hero, the young man says he simply did what he did out of instinct.
