NORTH YARMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The attorney for a man who police say shot and killed another man in North Yarmouth Sunday says his client acted in self defense.
Police say Merrill Kimball shot and killed Leon Kelley at Brown's Bee Farm. No charges have been filed against Kimball. State police say their investigation is ongoing and they have drawn no conclusions as to what happened.
Attorney Dan Lilley says Kimball only went to Brown's Bee Farm to help his wife, who is a partner in the business, collect honey. Kelley's father-in-law owns the farm. Lilley says Kimball was confronted by a group of Kelley's family members. He says the confrontation turned violent, and Kimball felt trapped.
"So he did what he thought was appropriate, reluctantly," Lilley told NEWS CENTER. "He took out the gun and shot at this fellow. The man kept coming, it didn't seem to phase him in the least. So he shot him a couple more times and it stopped the attack, unfortunately, caused the man's death."
NEWS CENTER did reach out to members of Kelley's family for comment but they declined to comment at this time.
