FALMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- While the amount of available daylight may be rapidly shrinking and the days themselves are growing colder, fall is still a wonderful time to get outside and explore Maine's natural beauty.
To help get people active and outside, the Maine Outdoor Coalition has partnered with land trusts and community groups to offer more than 100 events and activities in every corner and county for the annual Great Maine Outdoor Weekend.
"Pretty much anything you can think of to do in the fall, we have got covered this weekend," stated Kaitlyn Bernard, Maine program associate for the Appilacian Mountain Club, which is helping organize the event.
"It is just an effort to get as many events as possible, to get as many people outside as possible," she added. "We try to make sure that the events are fun, that they are easy, that they are free or very, very low cost."
The coalition sponsors two outdoor weekends each year, one in the fall and the other in winter to help remove some of the hurdles for folks who want to get out and active, but don't.
"It is basically trying to remove some of the barriers that people typically have to getting outside," she explained. "Basically, we try to address all those barriers by coming up with these really fun events that anyone can go to."
From hiking and biking, to nature walks, ATV rides, foraging for mushrooms, canoeing, kayaking and plenty more, the group has activities for the young and old. Bernard hopes the events will introduce people to new places, activities and community groups that they may not have known existed.
"I think 50% of the people who showed up for these events are new to the organizations, which is huge," she said. "I mean, these small organizations always need new members, always need some attention and some press about what they are doing, and so it has been a great way for people to see something new."
The annual Great Maine Outdoor Weekend kicks off on Friday September 27th and runs through Sunday the 29th.
