SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Police in South Portland say a teenage boy assaulted a six-year-old girl Monday at the Brown School playground on Highland Avenue. The incident happened around 6 p.m.
The victim was taken to the hospital, treated and released later that night.
Officials had issued a description of the suspect early Tuesday afternoon. The boy, who is between ages 12 and 14, is being interviewed by police. South Portland Police say they believe he may have mental health issues.
Investigators say little information about the case will be released in order to protect the victim and her family. NEWS CENTER spoke briefly with her father, who says she is going to be just fine.
Police say they aren't sure if charges will be filed in this case.
