(NEWS CENTER) - Seven years ago today Twitter was born -- and with it a dynamic change in news and pop culture.
The first tweet was sent by Jack Dorsey, one of the co-founders of Twitter. All it said was "just setting up my twttr" and since then it has been re-tweeted 10,733 times. Of course back them Twitter was without the "i" and "e."
Twitter has played a major role in how quickly we get news now. With 400 million users, and 200 million of those being active users, it's an immediate and global conversation. One of the biggest news moments was the night Osama Bin Laden was killed. That night Twitter broke a record. At that time, Twitter called it their "highest sustained rate of Tweets ever" and that was just based on the news that the President was going to announce it, then after the announcement.
Two other major Twitter moments were the Japanese tsunami, the so-called Arab spring. Twitter then broke a new record on Election day 2012. Twitter saw 20 million tweets on that day alone. That night, President Obama's victory tweet, broke the record for most re-tweeted tweet.
The most popular Twitter user is Justin Bieber who has a little over 36 million followers, followed by Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.
