STOCKTON SPRINGS, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- The Stockton Springs Community Church has not had steeple since 2008, but that is about to change. A group of women called the steeple committee helped raise the money to raise a new steeple.

The old one had to be taken down because it was rotting and it was starting to lean.

On Wednesday the base of the new steeple went up. Contractor Robert Hanscom still has three more sections to fit into place, and he is trying to make the new steeple look just like the old one.

"All we had was photographs to go by and so it had to be, the measurements and everything had to be figured out by the CAD system, computer system, and then that had to be transferred onto paper," Hanscom said.

Members of the steeple committee said the church still needs to raise another $67,000 for the new steeple. The steeple committee plans on holding lots of bake sales, auctions, and bean suppers to raise that amount.
