BREWER, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Kids at Brewer Community School got a real treat on Monday as two first ladies stopped by to pay them a visit.
Former first lady Barbara Bush and Maine first lady Ann LePage were going to talk to kids at the school via Skype. They organized the online visit with the help of Cherrire MacInnes, who teaches third grade at the school. What she and many others did not know is that BOTH ladies wanted to visit the school in person.
They slipped into the school and waited for the assembly to start. School staff then pretended the Skype connection wasn't working before pulling a curtain back and revealing the surprise.
"I was really really surprised," said fifth grader Lexi Morati, "I had no idea what was going on...if Mrs. McGinnis knew or if she was surprised too."
"I think that says a lot about both of our first ladies," remarked Jason Richard, who is the vice principal of the school, "to take the time out of their busy schedules to be here...obviously education and kids mean a lot to both of them so like I said we're really excited they took the time to come here."
Mrs. Bush has done Skype conferences with Brewer Community School in the past. She and Mrs. LePage took many questions from the kids. Most of them were about her dog 'Mini Me' which Mrs. Bush brought along to meet the kids.
