SACO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A landmark in downtown Saco facing the threat of being demolished received some support Sunday.

Over 50 people gathered at the old fire station on Thornton Avenue Sunday afternoon to say that they don't want to see it torn down.

The building was erected in the 30s as part of the Works Progress Administration, but it has sat empty since April 2011 when the fire department moved out.

People at today's rally say that history is worth preserving.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Saco Mayor, Mark Johnston, says the town council will meet Monday to continue the discussion on the fire house.

Rally members say the City Council should reconsider an offer to sell the building, even though voters turned down selling it last month.

At that vote, it was brought up that part of the reason the fire department moved out is that much of the building is in rough shape and would need significant repair work.
