FREEPORT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- More than a thousand people from across the state visited Freeport this weekend for the 49th annual Maine State Federation of Firefighters Convention.

The convention brings firefighters from every county in Maine together to learn from one another and to celebrate their service. There was a parade, a firefighter challenge, and a memorial service for fallen firefighters during the convention. Chief Darrel Fournier says the convention helps to strengthen the camaraderie between firefighters in Maine.

"You can go anywhere in the state, actually anywhere in the world, you can walk into a firehouse and they ask you where you're from, they find out you're a firefighter you're welcome," Forunier said. "We have a tremendous brother and sisterhood. This builds our brother and sisterhood and celebrates what we do to service our communities and the state of Maine."

The City of Ellsworth will host next year's convention, and the planning is already underway. The chief there says the 50th annual convention will be the biggest one yet.
