AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Secretary of State Charlie Summers has released the final wording of the same-sex marriage ballot question.
The question will read: "Do you want to allow the State of Maine to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples?"
The language is slightly different from the original question that Summers proposed: "Do you want to allow same-sex couples to marry?"
The change comes after a 30 day comment period, during which many advocates for same sex marriage argued that the Secretary's proposed language for the question was misleading. They wanted the question to reference the fact that members of the clergy would not be required to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies.
Mainers will vote on same-sex marriage in November.
