WESTBROOK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Maine has a new Elementary School Principal of the Year.
Kate Hersom, principal of Saccarappa School in Westbrook, received the honor from the Maine Principals' Association Monday morning.
She has been workng hard to improve literacy among the kindergarten through second grade students at the school. The teachers at Saccarappa have all been doing extra training in the latest methods to help students learn. 70 percent of the students at Saccarappa School receve free or reduced lunch. Hersom says she's very proud of the strides her staff has made.
"We work really hard to take care of all the basic needs of the kids, and we're really kind of escalating up to the self-actualization point where they're doing really great with literacy and reading. I want the community to know that these teachers work that hard."
Hersom attended Saccarappa School when she was a child. She was a high school english teacher before taking becoming the principal of this school.
