BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --  In the presidential nomination process, states award delegates to particular candidates.

This year, for instance, the republican who will face off against Barack Obama needs 1,144 delegates to secure the nomination.  Delegates are awarded state by state by either a caucus or a primary.  Maine is a caucus state, and towns will be holding their caucuses through the coming week.

Members of the Republican Party in Penobscot County came together at Husson University to select town delegates.  Those delegates will then go on to the state convention in May.  Officials with the Republican Party say the process say the process can seem complicated but it's all about participation.

"We are a caucus state," Traci Gauthier, GOP Chair for Penobscot County, said. "So if you don't show up to be involved in the process, then you really don't have a voice.  We are not a primary state.  You can't just walk in off the street and vote."

The state convention is May 6th in Augusta.  Twenty-four people will be chosen at the state convention to represent the Maine GOP in the national convention.  The National Republican Convention will be held in Florida in August.
