RAYMOND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- This strange and remarkably warm winter save on heating bills, but it is ruining lots of winter time fun. The annual Sebago Lake Ice fishing Derby, scheduled for Feb 18 & 19, has been cancelled because of unsafe ice conditions.
On Friday, ice in Jordan's Bay, the prime area for the derby, measured just four inches - no where near enough to hold the weight of thousands of people who normally flock to the event.
The Sebago Derby is one of the biggest wintertime events in Maine, and raises tens of thousands of dollars for Rotary Club charities. Organizers say the Shaw's Polar Dip and the snowmobile speed runs will still go on, weather and ice permitting.
But Rotary President Renee Pottle says undependable Sebago ice is why they also created a statewide derby, which will be held March 3th and March 4th. That event carries even more prizes, and is open to fishermen on some 20 lakes and ponds around Maine.
