NEWPORT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Maine's Department of Education has picked six schools to be renovated or replaced in the years ahead.
The schools topped a list of 71 schools on the department's list of schools that applied for help. They are Sanford High and Regional Technical Center and Emerson School in Sanford as well as Charles Snow School in Fryeburg, Morison Memorial School in Corinth, Nokomis Regional High School in Newport and Newport Elementary School in Newport.
Newport Elementary School was built in the 1940s. Officials in Regional School Unit 19 say in addition to aging, the building is also suffering from a lack of space. They say kindergartners through fourth graders have to move around from one building to another during the course of the day.
Nokomis Regional High School was built in 1968. Officials say while that building is structurally sound, it too is running out of space. They say in getting newer buildings, they can now take a closer look on how to improve education.
"It's an opportunity to really look at our whole system and decide what we want it to look like for the future," said William Braun, who is the Superintendent for RSU 19.
Braun added that he's expecting to meet with officials from the department of education sometime in the next few months. Department officials say that they intend to review all six buildings once more to see which one's can be renovated and which need to be rebuilt.
