"The Men Who Stare At Goats"
Review by Peter Weyl
Despite its offbeat title and terrific cast (Bridges! Clooney! Spacey!) "The Men Who Stare at Goats" is a letdown, a soggy piece of piffle dealing with the US Army's apparently true efforts to develop psychic warfare. (The movie's title comes from the military's research effort to kill a goat by simply willing it to die.)
Our story is told by amateurish journalist Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor), who in 2003 sets out to cover the Iraq War to overcome a broken heart. While languishing in Kuwait, he encounters the very odd Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), who wastes no time in divulging all the secrets of his Special Forces unit, "the New Earth Army": a battalion of psychedelic "Jedi Warriors" formed to wage "peaceful" combat, using only their powerful minds.
