Maine Democratic convention kicks off in Bangor

BANGOR, Maine (AP) - Maine Democrats are gathering in Bangor to rally support behind their candidates.

The Democratic convention begins on Friday at the Cross Insurance Center, where Republicans met last month.

On Friday, party activists will hear from 1st District Rep. Chellie Pingree. But most of the action will take place on Saturday.

Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins' challenger, Shenna Bellows, will address the crowd. She'll be followed by Emily Cain and Troy Jackson, who are seeking the party's nomination for the open 2nd District seat.

Later Saturday, Democrats will hear from U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, who's seeking to unseat LePage in November.

This year's keynote speaker is R.T. Rybak, the former mayor of Minneapolis and a Democratic National Committee vice chairman.
