Legend has it, Nero played the fiddle while Rome burned in a massive fire on July 18 in the year A.D. 64. However the story doesn't hold up since the fiddle hadn't yet been invented.
Historians like Tacitus and Suetonius wrote about Nero's skill with the lyre. He apparently had plenty of fans who would beg him to play. Although it's a good possibility they felt obligated to do so in order to stay in his good graces.
