The show made its Broadway debut on Oct. 10, 1935.
It was revolutionary for its time by featuring an all African- American cast. Although regarded as a classic now, it wasn't a hit at first. It ran from October to January for a total of 124 performances.
The critics remained lukewarm to it until a revival in 1976. The new production restored several songs that were cut after an early test performance. Since then, its reputation has only continued to grow.
