Garbo was born on Sept. 18, 1905.
Garbo was famous for making misery look beautiful in tragic movies like "Camille." In fact, it was so rare for her to smile on screen, when it finally happened, producers of "Ninotchka" built their entire advertising campaign around it.
"Ninotchka" was Garbo's first full-on comedic performance. But her foray into the lighter side of acting wouldn't last for long. She would only make one more movie before retiring from show business and going into seclusion.
