Fleming was born on July 27, 1948.

Unlike other Olympic events in which the athletes wear uniforms, skaters pick their own outfits as part of their artistic expression.  All of Fleming's dresses were designed and stitched by her mother, Doris.

Fleming was the only U.S. athlete to win a gold medal at the 1968 Winter Games.  She had built up such a huge lead in the compulsory rounds of the competition that she was still able to win gold despite a few mistakes during the free skate.
