Bishop was born on Feb. 3, 1918. His enduring fame is perhaps attributable more to his membership in Frank Sinatra's close-knit group of celebrity friends known as the Rat Pack than his own career as a stand-up comedian.
His talk show ran on ABC in competition with NBC's Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Carson won the ratings battle and Bishop's show was cancelled after two years in 1969. It was replaced by the Dick Cavett Show.
