Shots fired in Old Port

UPDATE: Portland Police found the semi-automatic gun. They are still asking witnesses of the incident to call them.

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Police say a man is behind bars after firing gunshots from a moving car in Old Port Thursday.

Portland PD says 25-year-old Noor Mohamed of Roxbury, Massachusetts fired at least three rounds from a semi-automatic handgun, in the area of Silver and Commercial Streets in Portland.

Mohamed was driving on Silver Street near Commercial Street at approximately 11:30 p.m. when he stopped his car and got into a fight with a group of unidentified males.

Lt. Gary Hutchenson says it started as a verbal altercation and escalated from there. "Witnesses heard someone yell that the man had a gun, the men ran towards Commercial Street, and then they heard gunshots."
Mohamed fled the wrong way on Silver Street striking a curb and disabling the car he was driving.  Police say witnesses pointed out the suspect to an officer as he was walking away from the car, and they arrested him without incident. No one was struck by any bullets and there is no sign of any property damage.

According to police, Mohamed is facing charges of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, unauthorized use of property, operating under the influence, and operating without a license.

Mohamed was driving a car he did not have permission to drive. Police say they are continuing to investigate this shooting and are asking for witnesses to call #207-874-8575.

Lt. Hutchenson describes shots fired in the Old Port as “unusual, not rare.”  Police are thankful that no one injured. The firearm has not been recovered but shell casings were found on Silver Street.
