YORK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Police in York are warning the public about a new and highly dangerous synthetic opioid that has made an appearance in their town.
Carfentanil is a drug used in elephant tranquilizer and is said to be 10,000 times stronger than morphine, and 100 times stronger than fentanyl.
Preliminary tests show that may have been present in a batch of heroin found in York over the weekend.
Officers say heroin containing carfentanil has the same appearance as heroin without it. It is not only extremely dangerous for drug users, but also to those who are around it. Handling it improperly or inhaling it could be fatal.
Officers say this is a scary situation that they hope will prompt those addicted to opioids to seek help.
Anyone looking for treatment options can call the York Police Department at 207-363-4444.
