Whale washes ashore on Kennebunkport Beach

Whale washes ashore in Kennebunkport

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Police in Kennebunkport say a large minke whale washed ashore Goose Rocks Beach early Friday morning.

While they say it is unclear how the whale died it was partially decompsed.

The Highway Department removed the carcass and the beach is now clear.

Minke whales are among the smaller whale species. They are common in the Gulf of Maine and grow to be less than 30 feet long when fully mature and weigh about four to five tons. They can live for 50 years or more.
