USM students protest cuts with flash mob

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Another day of student protesting at the University of Southern Maine Thursday, but it was more than just signs and chanting.

Students from the theater department performed a flash mob at the Portland Campus. They are protesting $14 million in cuts at USM, including 13 faculty members who lost their jobs.

Wednesday, Representative Ben Chipman of Portland submitted a bill asking the legislature to order a moratorium on the cuts. The Legislative Council voted Thursday not to accept the bill for consideration.

Students protesting say the flash mob is just one more way to call attention to the issue.

"It's to get eyes on us, because when people won't listen sometimes maybe doing something out of the norm will catch people's attention" student Sable Strout said.

Students are planning another rally Friday afternoon, and a march with professors in downtown Portland April 8th.
