ORONO, Maine (AP) - The Harold Alfond Foundation is giving the University of Maine a $1.5 million grant to support its athletic programs.
The university says the award will establish the Alfond Fund in the University of Maine Foundation.
It will create a fundraising structure for UMaine sports and support of the school's football program. The Alfond Fund will launch in spring of 2017.
University of Maine president Susan Hunter says the grant is a "game-changer" for fundraising at the university. The grant is a three-year award.
UMaine has more than 600 student-athletes and more than 4,500 season ticket holders.
The Harold Alfond Foundation is a Maine foundation that seeks to build on the legacy of Harold Alfond, the founder of Dexter Shoe Company.
