Trapped pets succumb to fire at Gray home

Multiple pets die in Gray house fire

GRAY, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — A baby rabbit was the only one of several pets to survive a fire at a home in Gray.

No people were home when the fire at 157 Center Rd. broke out around 11 a.m. on Saturday, but the house was full of pets of all kinds, according to the state Fire Marshal's Office.

Investigators from the Maine Fire Marshals' Office said the fire was caused by a gas burner that was left running on the kitchen stove.

Among the animals that died were dogs, cats, baby goats, rabbits and wedding doves.

One man said he ran into save any animals he could.

"To her, her animals are her kids. Granted, she has a daughter, but she's growing up, becoming a woman herself and moving on and the only thing she has left is animals, so  that's closest to losing something that is really yours in the end," said Ryan MacEachern.

The fire marshal said the owner of the home would not be able to stay there for the near future.
