Town of China investigating gravestone vandalism

CHINA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Police in the town of China are investigating vandalism to several gravestones in Pleasant View Ridge Cemetery, reports NEWS CENTER media partners at the Kennebec Journal.

A maintenance worker at the town-owned cemetery discovered the vandalism. The vandalism included vulgar and obscene words spray-painted on the back of eight headstones. There were also phrases like "no heaven and "Lucifer is watching." Many of the gravestones in the cemetery are from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The town manager said the vandalism seemed arbitrary. The city is looking into repairs and costs.
