Teacher fired, accused of taking inappropriate photos

BERWICK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A longtime teacher at Berwick Academy has been fired after being accused of taking inappropriate photos of students. Police say Brian Sanborn is the focus of a criminal investigation, but right now he is not facing any charges.

Police executed a search warrant at Sanborn's home in Sanford earlier this week seizing computers, cell phones and other items. South Berwick Police Chief Dana Lajoie says those items are now being analyzed and he expects to know a lot more about the photos early next week.

At his home today Brian Sanborn told NEWS CENTER he has brought shame to himself and his family and because of that he lost the job he has loved for the past 32 years, teaching and coaching at Berwick Academy. While he wouldn't talk specifically about the photos, he said the case has nothing to do with nudity, inappropriate touching of students or inappropriate comments made to students.

At Berwick Academy school officials declined comment, saying this is an on going criminal investigation.

Chief LaJoie says school officials conducted their own investigation before contacting police and felt they had enough to substantiate the allegations. That led to the decision to terminate Sanborn's employment.
