(NEWS CENTER) -- Searching for a missing pet can be a frustrating and heartbreaking experience. In desperation, some pet owners are turning to a Southern Maine farmer for help. She claims her supernatural connections can help four-legged friends find their way home.
Laurie Kennedy has always been an animal lover. She raises horses, ponies and other livestock on her farm. A decade ago, she discovered what she calls her 'supernatural' connection to animals during a visit from her horse's dentist. The dentist had to leave to treat another horse with a tooth problem -- Kennedy says she immediately knew what was wrong.
"It was in her mouth on the right, second tooth from the back on the bottom -- something is stuck there. So she went and checked the mare and called me up later and said you're right, that's where it was," said Kennedy.
The dentist began referring people who lost their pets to Kennedy. Over the phone, Kennedy acts as an intermediary between the animals and their owners.
"I want them to find their dog or their horse, lizard, or whatever it is I have to find. They always seem to think that I am holding out on them but I am not, I can only give them what I am feeling on that particular day at that particular moment. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't," said Kennedy.
Anthony Newton contacted Kennedy after searching for his dog Max for several days. The German shepherd had disappeared in a heavily wooded area.
"She said he is still out there and your are going to find him. I can help you but I got to do the work," said Newton.
Kennedy said she then focused on what Max was feeling.
"With him he was just off on a little road trip so to speak, and before you know it he was confused and he didn't know where he was and his senses, I could tell, his senses were compromised," said Kennedy.
Newton called Kennedy nearly every day while he searched for his dog -- a week later they got a 'breakthrough'.
"I pointed out there were alders that the dog had gone in through and he could spot it because of the size of the opening and he did see him and that was encouraging," Kennedy said.
"I was so shocked that she had led me right to him and I didn't know what to do. I called to him and I didn't want to scare him off and he walked into the woods," Newton said.
Newton finally found Max nearly three weeks after he disappeared. Someone spotted him in some bushes. Max nearly died from malnutrition and exposure, but has since fully recovered.
Newton says Kennedy's guidance was key to finding Max alive.
"She was there to say he's still out there and you are going to find him and I can help you, and if it wasn't for her I would have probably thrown in the towel," said Newton.
Kennedy says her 'services' are free and charging pet owners would be, in her words, 'emotional blackmail.' She instead encourages them to make a donation to their local animal shelter or the Humane Society.
"It's a gift and I pass it on as a gift," said Kennedy.
As for Max he's doesn't go anywhere without a leash.
Over the years Kennedy has helped locate several hundred missing pets from all over the country.
