PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER) -- Habitat For Humanity has taken a big step forward in building its first ever LEED certified home. Homes that are LEED certified meet strict standards for environmentally friendly design and energy efficiency.

Revision Energy installed a solar hot water system on the Habitat house in Portland Sunday. Habitat has been planning and bulding this house for about 2 years.

The home has good insulation and it lets in lots of light to save money on electricity. Dan Wallace, the construction manager on this project, said the point of building a home like this is to save money for its low-income owner.

This home should be ready by January at the latest.

Making it energy efficient did cost more money, but Wallace said Habitat tried to save in other areas, like by building the home on a finished concrete slab, instead of digging a foundation.
