LEWISTON (NEWS CENTER) -- Four Maine school districts are splitting a grant with Bates College to help kids get into math and science. As part of that grant, girls in the 5th through 8th grades from Portland, Falmouth, Cape Elizabeth and Brunswick attended a special seminar at Bates this weekend to boost their confidence. The grant aims to get kids to think of all the practical applications of math and science have, making the numbers, Xes and Ys actually stand for something. Fiona Cagney, a 6th grader at King Middle School, said she really enjoyed the experiments. "I think it's really cool that you get to come out here on a Saturday that usually people are just hanging out and watching TV or something. I think it's an interesting thing to do." The grant also pays to train teachers on how to bring more real-world problems into the classroom. In all, the schools are splitting $294,000.
