SCARBOROUGH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The question of whether or not to allow dogs to run free on beaches in Scarborough will be going to voters.
The town council voted to require dog owners to keep their pets on leashes at all time.
That ordinance went into effect after an endangered piping plover was killed by a dog running loose Pine Point beach.
Last week, the council decided not to reconsider its leash law, but town residents turned in 90 petitions with 2,872 signatures from residents against the new ordinance.
On Monday, those signatures were validated and the law will go to a town wide vote.
