SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- City staffers will be test driving a new electric car this week as part of a grant program to promote electric vehicles.
The Greater Portland Council of Governments received a grant from Central Maine Power to lease the car for two years. South Portland is the first city to use it. The city has applied for a second grant from CMP to get its own electric car, and eventually, the city plans to have only electric cars in its non-emergency fleet.
'That would basically be a lot of our people in the planning office, code enforcement, driving around the city," Assistant City Manager Jon Jennings said. "We think that this would be a great opportunity for us to take a leadership role in the city and move forward on the electric vehicle side."
Central Maine Power will be awarding at least six more electric vehicle grants this year.
