AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Maine has thousands of veterans trying to find work.
The Maine Department of Labor says about 8,000 veterans use the state's career centers each year, looking for jobs.
Some of those veterans got face-to- face employment help today at the Hiring Our Heroes job fair in Augusta on Tuesday.
About two dozen businesses and government agencies were there to meet with vets, and all of them had job openings in Maine. Some of the veterans told NEWS CENTER they've been looking for work for a year or more, while others say they have only been on the hunt a short time.
The veterans and the MDOL say they have good skills and training, from the military, and the challenge is to convince employers of that. But several of the employers - from private companies like Cianbro to government agencies like the Maine Department of Corrections -- say the veterans have skills they can definitely use, the businesses want to hire them.
The Hiring Our Heroes event was organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, with help from the MDOL. The Labor Department says there will be another veterans' job fair in November in Portland.
