AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A major construction project is underway on one of the busiest roads in Central Maine.
Western Avenue in Augusta will be widened, adding new travel and turning lanes. The road will also be repaved, and have new traffic signal systems.
The project is scheduled to be completed by August 2014.
The affected half-mile stretch runs from Edison Drive to Prescott Road.
According to DOT Project Manager Shawn Smith, the contractor will allow two-way traffic during commuting hours in the morning and evening to minimize delays.
Smith said between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. there will be alternating one-way traffic.
About 23 thousand cars travel on Western Avenue each day, and by 2015, DOT projects that number to increase to 27 thousand.
Smith said the increase in traffic and condition of the road made this project a priority.
