c. L.A. Tribune
The character was played by Ed Asner, who was born on Nov. 15, 1929.
Lou Grant first appeared as the lovably, gruff boss on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." Asner won three Emmys for his work on the series about the behind-the-scenes antics at a TV newsroom.
Asner was later spun off into his own show called "Lou Grant," which transplanted his character onto the staff of a Los Angeles newspaper. As an hour-long drama, the tone was a big change from the lighthearted humor of its predecessor. However, the kudos continued for Asner as he racked up two more Emmys.
