LEVANT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- The owners of a family farm in Levant say they are facing a backlash for being against same sex marriage. 'Treworgy Family Orchards' had a campaign sign on their property asking people to vote 'no' on Question 1, which if passed by voters in November would give same sex couples the right to marry.
Farm owners say they got it from a friend at church and put it out on their property not thinking much of it. The sign was on their property for a week. On Sunday, a customer said she was offended by it and once the news got on Facebook, a firestorm started.
Many people said they would no longer go the farm. Others came to the defense of the Treworgys. The family says the biggest impression they got is that they hurt people's feelings by putting the sign up and they have since taken it down.
"We've been pretty grieved by that misunderstanding," said Robin Pellerin, who is the daughter of farm owner Gary Treworgy, "that because we support 'No on 1' that we don't love these people, so it's been hard on the family...just to hear that from people, that we don't love them and support them."
Gary Treworgy says he has put out campaign signs in the past but never have they drawn this kind of reaction. Treworgy Farms will be open until this Sunday. After that it will be closed for the season.
Treworgy says at this point he's not sure if he'll put the sign up again before Election Day.
