PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - About 50 people gathered in downtown Portland for a cash mob in support of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England.
Grace Cleaves and her husband Mike Miles organized the event. A cash mob is when people come together and visit a business to support it through purchases or donations.
"This is a quiet and affirmative activity this morning. We're not here to protest anything, we're here to support planned parenthood and healthy choices for women", Cleaves said.
For the past several weeks anti-abortion protesters have been gathering outside the Planned Parenthood office in Congress Street. The cash mob was organized as a way to counter that by showing support for the organization.
Participants were greeted by protesters this morning as they made their way into the building.
"If this room one of you were going into was filled with dozens toddlers with guns to their heads would you not think there was an injustice? Just because the baby is still in the womb, because it has not come out does not mean it is not a life", said one of the protesters Daniel Emma
The event went off without incident. Planned Parenthood officials say the cash mob generated about $2,000 in donations.
